Special Deals for Achro 102f6 and Achro 127f8 owners

When the Achro 102f6 was originally sold, it was sold as an incomplete scope that did not live up to its full potential. Burgess Optical sold the Achro 102f6 at a discount because of the advertised deficiencies. Burgess Optical has offered a money back satisfaction guarantee on the Achro 102f6.

The Achro 127f8 had fine optics, but it, too, was an incomplete scope. This page identifies the remaining issues with these scopes.

Fine Focusers Finder Scopes Lens Upgrade for the 102f6

Fine Focusers

The fine focusers for the Achro 102f6 and Achro 127f8 owners are now available.

When the Achro 102f6 and the Achro 127f8 were shipped, the fine focusers were not available. The manufacturer of the scopes told us that they could convert a fine focuser from their microscopes to the Achros. This was to be a low cost feature. When it came time for the factory to build and ship the complete scopes, they could not make the fine focuser work. Rather than endlessly delay delivery of the scopes, we shipped the scopes to customers thinking that we could develop our own fine focuser.

The machinist from B&D Instruments, who was making our Crayford focusers, began working on the fine focuser. Unfortunately, he developed lung cancer, stopped working, and died. But, I continued working on the fine focuser for the Achros. My task was made more difficult because the original focuser had not provision for attaching a fine focuser, and whatever I came up with was going to be a retrofit.

Finally, we have a working solution for the fine focuser. Because this is a retrofit, the fine focuser requires a bracket to attach the fine focus knob to the telescope focuser.

The Backpacker 101 telescope was designed to have a focuser with a fine focus knob integrated with the focuser. There is no attaching bracket for the new focuser.

We are offeringa choice of two options for owners of the Achro 102f6 and Achro 127f8:

1. Get a FREE 10:1 fine focus knob that requires some minor assembly.
2. Replace the focuser on the Achro 102f6 or Achro 127f8 with a new focuser having a 36:1 fine focus knob. This option will cost $99.

Owners that choose Option 1 cannot later choose Option 2.

Finder Scopes

Finder scopes are now available. The finders are 7x50, and come in one of two colors: black or white. Achro 102f6 and Achro 127f8 owners can upgrade to the new finders for $20. Call Burgess Optical to order your finder.

Lens Upgrade for Achro 102f6 Owners

The objective that shipped with the Achro 102f6 did not meet Burgess Optical's high standards. We recognized this and informed all who bought this scope from us. Originally, we decided to offer an upgrade to the Achro 102f6 owners of a semi-APO objective lense that would fit in the Achro 102f6 tube. In December, 2003, we offered the Achro 102f6 purchasers three options:

Option 1- Purchase the 102 f/6 "As Is" for $150. You may add a custom case for an additional $50 while supplies last. For those customers who already ordered the case or who purchased the package, you will receive the set for $200. If you choose this option, you may purchase a Thomas Back designed Semi- Apo lens replacement for $100 when they become available.

Option 2 - Wait for the TMB designed Semi- Apo lens availability and receive your 1026 OTA with new lens. The cost is $250. You may add a custom case for an additional $50, while supplies last. If you already ordered a case or package, the total cost is $300.

Option 3 - Cancel your order and receive a refund for any payments you have made.

After many attempts at obtaining a good replacement lens for the 102f6, we have finally found a lens that is an improvement over the original 102f6 objective. At the same time, we also developed the Backpacker 101 telescope. So, we are adding an option available to the Achro 102f6 owners: instead of a replacement objective for the Achro 102f6, receive a Backpacker 101, with an objective much closer to APO quality than the replacement semi-APO lens, at a deep discount.

As soon as the Backpacker 101 is available, we will provide further details to the Achro 102f6 owners regarding the upgrade.
